As our DNA determines how we age, we can support and nourish our skin through different foods to determine how our skin ages. 

There are 3 layers to skin; you have the outermost layer, which is the epidermis, this layer contains pigment-producing cells that give our skin its colour. Beneath the epidermis is the dermis; the dermis contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, sweat and oil glands. The dermis layer is made up of networks of elastin and collagen to promote suppleness and strength. Underneath the dermis is a layer of fatty and connective tissue called the hypodermis, that gives structure.

Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins found in the body and it keeps the body’s tissues elastic and strong. As we age, our body looses its ability to produce collagen, which leads to poorer elasticity in our skin. However we can support collagen production through having a diet that is rich in amino acids.

Amino acids give our skin, hair and nails nourishment from within, which leads to stronger connective tissue, and keeps skin smooth and elastic. Having a diet that is high in amino acids will support the production of collagen. Foods that are rich in amino acids include grass fed meat, wild caught fish, organic free-range eggs, dairy, bone broth, fruits and vegetables. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, ensure you’re combining your foods in order to make complete proteins – this involves having a serve of a grain, a legume and nut/seed. Also, nourishing our diet with foods that are rich in vitamin A, C and E will also support the body’s production of collagen and lead to better health outcomes.

So what are you doing for your skin to keep it supple and young? Try adding a scoop of protein powder to your smoothie in the morning, or ensure you’re getting enough protein from other sources throughout the week and don’t forget to protein combine!
